5 ways I practice self care

Self-care to me is super important. Your mind is your very best company, so it naturally needs to be taken care of. The season of exams, final projects, graduations, year-end celebrations and the hype of summer is quickly approaching. This blog post is devoted to 5 different ways I practice self-care when life catches up and I need to find small ways to focus on myself.

 

Unplug from Social Media

There’s nothing I love more than a good social media unplug. If you’re anything like me, I catch myself on this constant scroll. Through Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat and then I repeat – even when there’s nothing important to look at. Unplugging from social media gives your mind a little refresh, to give yourself extra time to catch up on what is important and reassess your priorities. It also gets rid of this constant feeling of FOMO – which can actually be super unhealthy. Even unplugging for 24 hours benefits me so much.

Meet up with a Friend

As I have shared before in the power of experience – finding relationship in mutual life struggles can actually help one another find peace. If you and a friend are both stressing over the same project, take a break and do something unrelated and don’t even talk about the task that is impeding your freedom. It is okay to take a break. Decompressing this stress with a friend can be quite relaxing, to make it easier to move then forward later.

Read a book or listen to a Podcast

So lately, this has been one of my favorite ways to unwind. I used to not be a fan of reading, but there is something to be said for sitting in a coffee shop and just reading a book. You get to take a break from the real world and enter into an imaginary space that has been created by an author just for you. However, if you’re not interested in books, podcasts obviously do the same trick. It gets your mind thinking about what the speaker has to say and gives it a break from its own thoughts running wild.

Sleep, stay Hydrated and take your Vitamins

These three things are obviously so important. I feel so much better when I am hydrated and have slept.  Your mind needs to rest.

Switch up your Look

Taking care of yourself internally, is the most important part but there is something so refreshing about switching up or enhancing your outward appearance. This can be anything from getting your nails done, a new hair cut or color, a cute new outfit or a facial.   There is something about looking your best on the outside to make yourself feel good on the inside. Lately when I feel like I need a little pick me up, I temporally dye my hair pink. I find it so fun to make an evening out of it, by putting on a facemask on while I sit with hair dye in my hair. Then, I have this super fun refreshing color to boost my energy. Treat yourself to a little shopping spree or a spa day to make yourself feel better.

 

Ultimately these tips and tricks only help so much. If you are still feeling down and unwell after the stressful event comes to an end, it is okay to seek further help. Your mental health is important. You are important.
